Development Engineer, Utility-Scale


The Development Engineer will work alongside Project Developers in a team structure to develop a portfolio of large-scale solar PV and battery storage solutions from project origination to the commencement of construction. Development Engineers occupy a multi-faceted role and provide technical leadership for projects including preliminary design, production forecasting, permitting, and the interconnection of projects between one and 300 megawatts in size.

Candidates must demonstrate keen interest and knowledge of the solar and battery storage industry, and a proven ability to efficiently and effectively multi-task in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment. To succeed in this role, frequent travel may be required.


  • Demonstrate technical ownership of responsible projects in development
  • Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of the Company’s technical design standards and methodologies
  • Maintain database of Equipment pricing, availability, suitability
  • Perform cost/benefit analysis of design and technology variants to optimize economic and performance outcomes
  • Create preliminary drawings including site plans and system one lines in AutoCAD
  • Compile engineering submittals for proposals
  • Develop environmental constraints maps using ArcGIS
  • Produce accurate energy production estimates (PVSyst)
  • Assess Point of Interconnection (POI) location and overall site viability (desktop and site visits)
  • Manage interconnection and Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) (utility point of contact, drafting interconnection requests, reviewing preliminary interconnection feedback, reviewing and assessing studies, and negotiating generator interconnection agreements)
  • Bid and manage outside environmental and engineering consultants
  • Review, assess, and clarify results of third-party studies (Critical Issues Analysis, ESA phase I, Environmental Assessment, Wetlands delineations/ JD, geotechnical surveys, ALTA/boundary/topo surveys, Threatened/Endangered Species, Cultural Resources, etc.) and identifying risks or design constraints
  • Serve as point of contact with federal, state and local agencies (e.g., SHPO, DEQ, USACOE, building inspector, )
  • Perform technical discretionary permitting support
  • Support RFP response
  • Perform due diligence of acquired projects
  • Assist project team with other projects on an ad-hoc basis
  • Deliver presentations on specific topic areas of expertise when appropriate
  • Continually seek new equipment and design methodologies for PV systems
  • Develop and implement internal processes
  • Participate in project level strategic reviews
  • Other duties, as assigned


  • Proven working experience as a project, sales or development engineer for 2 or more years in the solar PV industry
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Structural, or Mechanical)
  • Understanding of the NEC, NESC, relevant electrical codes, building codes, and permitting procedures for large scale solar projects
  • Software experience: Google SketchUp, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, PV Syst (or similar), ArcGIS (or similar), any project/construction management software
  • Detail orientation
  • Broad technical understanding of solar project development
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize needs with timely responses
  • Creativity in problem solving
  • Technical risk identification at all stages of development
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings and review project documentation for technical requirements
  • Strong understanding of physical, electrical, and structural construction plans
  • Strong MS Excel skills
  • Valid state driver’s license, clean DMV driving record
