Vice President of Development

 JOB SUMMARY

The VP Development is responsible for managing a team of developers and development engineers who progress the company’s pre-construction pipeline of solar PV and battery storage projects from site acquisition through development completion for ground mounted, front of the meter projects between 3 megawatts and 150 megawatts.  The VP Development is a senior level position responsible for the management and training of development personnel, key account management, annual budgeting and resource allocation, and market strategies, and as such will be looked to as a leader within the organization. This position reports directly to the CEO.


PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBLITIES

Through the management of developers and development engineers assigned to specific markets, the VP Development will oversee the build out of the company’s pre-construction pipeline including major development milestones that create and safeguard value in solar and / or battery storage projects:

  • Real Estate: Site analysis, site selection, site negotiation and title work culminating in a portfolio of target parcels under lease or purchase option
  • Zoning: Securing zoning exceptions such as Conditional Use Permits
  • Tax: Securing abatements and exemptions from local tax officials
  • Environmental: managing studies and surveys supporting discretionary and mandatory permits (e.g., CEIA, Phase I ESA)
  • Interconnection: identifying advantaged points of interconnection; progressing projects through the interconnection studies process
  • PPA: working with the Director of Origination to market the project to Power Purchase Agreement customers
  • Capital Markets: working with the executive team to market mature projects to buyside partners at NTP (e.g., APA, MIPA, MIPSA or equivalent purchase agreements)
  • Strategy: Maintaining a strong understanding of the regulatory and policy environments for assigned markets, and participating in market analysis and market entry recommendations
  • Investment Strategy: Working in partnership with company’s Investment Committee, which oversees budget allocations across the company’s project portfolio

 

IDEAL CHARACTERISTICS 

  • 4+ years of hands-on, utility scale solar development; PJM experience ideal
  • Proven leadership and management capabilities, has managed a team of direct reports
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Solid understanding of energy market design
  • Strong attention to detail and extremely organized; willingness to lead in a data driven and to create KPIs aligned to business outcomes
  • High energy, responds well to pressure, works to deadlines
  • Creative and a solid sense of humor
  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as with a team

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education:  University Degree   
  • Experience:  Minimum of 4 years developing utility scale solar projects in the US
  • Other Skills: Familiarity with the creation of development plans and budgets; comfort using traditional software for project and pipeline management (e.g., Salesforce, Smartsheet); familiarity with integration of the development process into financial planning, budgeting, and accounting processes
